As summer approaches, so do important decisions about your Social Security benefits. In this newsletter, we've gathered the essential information you need to make smart choices that could significantly impact your financial future.
Whether you're approaching retirement, already receiving benefits, or helping a loved one navigate their options, these straightforward tips could mean thousands of additional dollars in your pocket over time.
You'll find clear explanations of claiming-age strategies, work rules for 2025, and special situations that might apply to your unique circumstances. Now – let’s get into it!
Your Full Retirement Age (FRA) determines your benefit amount. If you were born in 1960 or later, your FRA is 67. Claiming before this age reduces your benefits, while waiting until age 70 can increase them significantly.
Claiming at 62? Your benefits could be reduced by up to 30%
Waiting until 70? Your benefits could increase by up to 24%
For example, someone with a $2,000 monthly benefit at FRA would receive:
Only $1,400 if claimed at 62
A generous $2,480 if delayed until 70
Long-term impact: Waiting until 70 instead of claiming at 62 could mean nearly $200,000 more in total benefits over a lifetime!
After reaching FRA: Work as much as you want with no benefit reduction
Before reaching FRA in 2025: Earn up to $22,320 without reduction
In the year you reach FRA: Earn up to $59,520 before your birthday without reduction
TIP: Once you reach Full Retirement Age, working won't reduce your benefits - though it may affect taxation.
Government employees: You may be entitled to more Social Security benefits due to the recently implemented Social Security Fairness Act
Divorced individuals: May qualify for benefits based on an ex-spouse's record if married 10+ years
Widows/widowers: May be eligible for survivor benefits
MONTHLY MONEY SAVING TIP:
Consider scheduling a free benefit review with your state’s Food Stamps Agency. They can help identify any additional benefits you may qualify for but aren't yet receiving.
